NASAP is here!

NASAP poster

I’m currently out of town at the NASAP National Conference in Denver Colorado. NASAP stands for North American Society of Adlerian Psychologists. I’m speaking on ADHD – Learn the Facts and Practical Tools you can use today. I’m part of the Parenting Track at the conference which is focused on helping parents learn how to parent according to the tenants of Adlerian Psychology.

So, what is Adlerian Psychology? Alfred Adler was an Austrian medical doctor, psychotherapist and founder of the school of individual psychology. He believed that all behavior is based on our pursuit of significance and belonging. He also focused on the importance of the family constellation, birth order and while he focused on the individual and how the mind, body and emotions work together, he also accepted and believed that the interconnectedness of all humans was an important factor and talked about an individual’s “Lifestyle” which was more about how they contributed to their larger community rather than what we commonly think of as lifestyle now.

Adlerian psychology is a strengths-based approach. One of Alfred Adler’s students, Rudolf Dreikurs said that we can only build on strengths. He also wrote a parenting book based on Adlerian principles called “Children, The Challenge”.

Alfred Adler was far ahead of his time. He was promoting equality, humanistic concepts long before it was in vogue! He believed that an individual’s mental health depended on their strivings for success, connectedness with others and their contributions to society as a whole.

I am an Adlerian Therapist and am very strengths focused! I believe strongly that all individuals have strengths and struggles and if we can identify the struggles, we can use the strengths and “super powers” to remedy the struggles.
